Debbie Travis has a great book called “The Painted House” that will give you great ideas for colors and techniques like the ones you’re considering. I agree that brown might be too dark, but a mocha or amber color with a cottage white over it made to look rustic plaster might look beautiful.

I’m looking in a Tuscan decorating book right now, the colors that I see used the most are gold, green, cranberry, orange and a natural sand color. The lighting is the important feature that brings the warm glow to the colors. The textures of the walls appear to be imperfect plaster and the slight imperfections add to the colors shading.
try using a plaster technique on the walls in the livingroom. this will “rough “up the walls a little and give it more depth. then paint it a terra cotta color, maybe a little darker. with that color and the plaster effect you will end up with a tuscan look that will flow with the colors you want in your kitchen.
