One of the most beautiful parts of Tuscany is the region of Tavainuzze near Florence.
The Sixteenth Century Villa dei Collazzi is located in this region and local legend is that it was designed by Michelangelo.
One of the features that impresses most visitors is the huge scale of the Villa.
The foundation is more than eighty feet across and has two – north and south – wings.
Sitting atop a high Tuscan hill, the view in all directions is expansive.
The east side is open and flooded with sunshine, which allows for shelter and warmth in early spring and late fall. This shelter also offers cool shade in the warm summer months.
The entrance through the loggia admits one directly to the great hall, an enormous apartment with a barrel vaulted ceiling.
From this hall, at each side open out series of rooms and passages.
Elsewhere than in the great hall, many of the rooms on the ground floor have beamed and painted ceilings, the beam ends resting upon carved corbels.
The stuccoed walls are of a warm brownish grey color and the pillars are sienna which is the brown tone that dominates over the colder gray color so often found in villas.
Michaelangelo may or may not have been the actual architect that built the villa… but whoever the architect was, he displayed a vast knowledge of balance and composition.
